Officers with the St. Petersburg Police Department were called to do a welfare check at the home of Harriet Owens, 60, on Sunday afternoon, WFLA reported.

Family members had called police, saying they had tried to reach Owens for several days, but had been unsuccessful, WTVT reported.

According to an affidavit obtained by WTSP, officers found Owens’ son, Jontrell Collins, inside the home where the two lived together. Officers asked Collins to step outside as they went inside to look for his mother.

Officers said they found Owens dead, and that Collins had beat his mother “with his fists and unknown weapon.” They said that Owens had injuries that were consistent with self-defense wounds, WFTS reported.

Collins was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, according to online jail records.

Court records obtained by WFTS indicate Collins was previously arrested on charges that he attacked his mother and father earlier this year.

Police have not offered any information about a possible motive.
