‘We’re ready:’ Framingham fires up their snow plow fleet for winter storm

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Framingham’s Department of Public Works fired up their engines and rolled out more than 100 pieces of equipment to battle the snowfall on city roads overnight.

Bob Lewis, director of Framingham DPW, said they have 120 crews consisting of city employees and contractors on the roads.

“Once it’s go time we don’t stop,” said Lewis Sunday night. “It’s a good starter for us.”

The department has been preparing for significant snowfall since Labor Day.

City employees in the control room monitored radio traffic and live video of the streets to keep tabs on the plow drivers and their routes.

Down the hall in the garage, others were getting ready to treat their equipment that may have been damaged in the cleanup.

“I have three guys ready to bring them in,” said Jeff Rousseau, who oversees the repairs.

Lewis added, “We’ll be replacing plow blades. We’ll be replacing hoses, windshield wipers, headlights.”

Plow trucks were some of the few vehicles on Framingham roads late Sunday night.

For the first time, like a handful of other Massachusetts towns and cities, Framingham will try to treat their roads with salt brine. The substance containing water, salt, molasses, and soy has been laid down on a handful of city streets.

Lewis explained, “It prevents that bond between the ice and the pavement. So, it makes it more slushy and easier to push off.”

He told Boston 25 Sunday they’d be working until 5 am Monday.
