Some flight delays, cancellations at Logan Airport after major airline’s tech glitch

BOSTON — United Airlines flights across the country were grounded overnight due to technology issues, with delays and cancellations lingering into Thursday morning at Boston’s Logan Airport.

The grounding of United Airlines flights was caused by a glitch with the “Unimatic” system, which is crucial for tracking flight information such as weight, balance, and flight times.

A spokesperson for United Airlines stated that extra expenses, including hotel accommodations, were covered for customers affected by the delays.

The technology issue began just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, affecting United Airlines flights nationwide.

As of Thursday morning, at least six United flights were delayed and two were canceled at Logan Airport, according to FlightAware.

“We got a text around 2 a.m. that our flight had gotten canceled,” Heather Marx told Boston 25 News.

Marx and her family were supposed to fly out of Portland, Maine to Costa Rica before their departing flight was moved to Logan for a later time.

Ultimately, their flight out of Logan was cancelled.

“It sounds like they gave us $45 in vouchers for food while we wait 10 hours,” Marx explained.

“I have my extra carry-on things in my bag just in case I have to spend the night but hopefully, I get home today,” Tagwana Webster said.

The problem was internal with United Airlines only and caused grounded flights Wednesday night.

Webster was headed back home to Illinois.

“When this was happening our flight was actually in the air so I had heard everything was grounded but we were already in route,” Mario Davila said as he waited for his flight to Houston.

United Airlines confirmed that the outage was not related to cybersecurity concerns.

United Airlines is working to restore normal operations.
