Route 1A in East Boston partially reopens over 24 hours after charter bus crash

BOSTON — Route 1A in East Boston reopened Tuesday afternoon, more than 30 hours after a charter bus transporting workers to Logan Airport toppled multiple utility poles on Monday morning.

Video from the scene showed a crashed Academy bus with a shattered windshield stopped on the southbound side of 1A at 175 William F. McClellan Highway, which carries traffic to the airport.

The northbound side of the road reopened shortly before 8 p.m. on Monday, but the southbound lanes remained closed into Tuesday afternoon as crews worked on repairs.

Revere police posted on social media just before 1:30 p.m. that drivers could finally use the southbound side of the road. All lanes were fully reopened by 6:00 p.m. Tuesday night.

“Thanks to our District 7 officers, utility companies, motorists, residents of East Boston, and partners,” Boston police posted on social media.

Massachusetts State Police troopers detoured southbound traffic at Boardman Street and northbound traffic at Addison Street for much of Monday, according to MassDOT.

Boston police said the bus knocked down four light poles and two transformers shortly before 5:45 a.m., leaving wires strewn across the highway in the area of Suffolk Downs.

The bus had several people on board and two injuries were reported. Police said both people were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
