Quick-moving snow delays start of school in several Massachusetts communities

GEORGETOWN, Mass. — About two inches of snow fell early Wednesday morning in Georgetown, but the timing and the amount were just enough to delay public schools for two hours.

The plows were out in the North Shore town, salting early and often, and working to clear the snow that blanketed the roads.

It wasn’t a blockbuster storm by any means, but it was enough to make the roads slippery and cover driveways. The fresh flakes were a welcoming sight for the folks at Georgetown Building Supply.

“When it gets cold and wet we sell a lot of ice melt and stuff like that, but the snow is helping us out a little bit,” Lisa McGrath told Boston 25. We’re moving shovels and brooms that we haven’t moved. Last winter was a dud.”

The snow moved through quickly but the work will continue throughout the day and Georgetown Building Supply expects people will be restocking their ice melt supply.

“They’re coming in consistently and since the temperature is going to drop tonight they’ll be in later this afternoon for salt and sand again to help again with the overnight low temperatures,” McGrath added.

The concern for tonight is whatever doesn’t get cleared during the day will freeze over, creating slick conditions for Thursday.
