BEVERLY, Mass. — Several apartments were rendered uninhabitable after a car fire spread to two buildings on Monday afternoon.
Firefighters responding to a report of a motor vehicle fire at 23 Bennett Street around 3:15 p.m. found heavy smoke and flames coming from a car parked in the driveway between two three-story apartment buildings, according to Fire Chief Peter O’Connor.
The fire extended to both buildings and due to the close proximity of the dwellings, a second and third alarm response was called.
All occupants were able to escape without injury.
Flames were scene in a first-floor bedroom of 25 Bennett Street, along with in the walls and ceilings of the third floor apartment in the same building.
Chief O’Connor says the fire in 23 Bennett was largely contained to the exterior of the building, although the first-floor apartment was left uninhabitable.
With the help of firefighters from Salem, Beverly, Danvers, Hamilton, Peabody, and Manchester by the Sea working aggressively, the flames were extinguished.
Four apartments were rendered uninhabitable, one in 23 Bennett and three in 25 Bennett, but Chief O’Connor says many of the personal belongings in both buildings can be salvaged.
More than a dozen people were displaced. The Red Cross is working to assist the displaced individuals.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
