Investigation underway after Green Line train derails in East Somerville

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — An investigation is underway after a Green Line train derailed overnight in Somerville.

According to the MBTA, the incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday when a Green Line train carrying five passengers collided with an out-of-service train that was unoccupied.

One car from each of the two-car trains derailed.

One passenger and four train operators were taken to the hospital, but all are expected to recover.

Shuttle buses are operating between North Station and Medford/Tufts, though it’s unclear how long they will be in service as investigators work to determine the cause of the derailment.

“The MBTA apologizes to Green Line customers impacted by the service disruption following the late-night incident involving two trains,” the MBTA said in a statement.

The Federal Transit Administration and the NTSB are investigating the crash.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
