Investigation continues into Green Line collision in Somerville

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — A federal investigation continues Monday morning after a Green Line train collision in Somerville over the weekend.

Five people were taken to the hospital after MBTA officials said the train collided with another train that was out of service at East Somerville station.

As of Monday morning, at least one train is still on the tracks.

Shuttle buses continue to replace service Monday morning between North Station and Union Square and Medford/Tufts, amid the federal investigation into the crash.

The crash happened early Sunday around 12:30 a.m., and NTSB investigators worked all day and night on Sunday to document and analyze the equipment involved at the scene of the crash.

“I was on the train prior that got stuck in the tunnel. We were in the tunnel without power for an hour,” said Rachel LaBella who was on another Green Line Train before the crash. “I thought it was lucky I hopped off the train when I did or else I would’ve been on the train that crashed,” LaBella added.

One passenger was taken to the hospital for a reported neck injury following the crash.

Four MBTA operators were evaluated at the hospital and released without being admitted.

An NTSB spokesperson tells Boston 25 that the investigation is in its early stages, but a preliminary report is expected within 30 days.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
