Officer injured evacuating people from Milford fire

MILFORD, Mass. — A police officer was injured Monday while evacuating people from a large fire in Milford.

The fire took place at 72 Main Steet, in a building that housed residences on the top floors, and the Turtle Tavern on the ground level.

The initial call was for smoke coming into one of the apartments, according to Milford Fire Chief Mark Nelson.

“[Fire Crews] observed fire traveling the outside of the building up the exterior. They quickly called for additional resources,” Nelson said.

Milford police officers who responded to the scene worked to evacuate residents.

“We evacuated at least six and two children,” Nelson said.

One of the officers involved in evacuating people was injured in the process, though the extent of injuries are unknown at this time, according to officials.

The size of the building posed some challenges for fire crews.

“Because of the volume of water that we needed and required, we did have some issues. We ended up carrying hoses to other hydrants to make sure we had an adequate water supply,” Nelson said. “It was very labor intensive,” he continued.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The building is a total loss, according to officials.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
