BOSTON — Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said Tuesday that she will go to the nation’s capital to testify about Boston’s designation as a sanctuary city.
Wu said an exact date still needs to be decided but said she looked forward to sharing Boston’s “great work” on Capitol Hill.
“My team and I have accepted the committee’s offer to go in person and share the great work that Boston has been doing to make us the safest city in America. And to get into the details of what that means and all the pieces of our community that are involved in that,” Wu said Tuesday.
The letter, written by House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer, states in part “Sanctuary jurisdictions and their misguided and obstructionist policies hinder the ability of federal law enforcement officers to effectuate safe arrests…making America less safe.”
Boston is a sanctuary jurisdiction under the Boston Trust Act, which was reaffirmed in December 2024.
Comer requested documents and communications related to the sanctuary policies in the cities, mainly regarding their impact on public safety and federal immigration enforcement.
Comer said that sanctuary cities like Boston are using “misguided and obstructionist policies” to shield migrants from law enforcement.
“[The policies] hinder the ability of federal law enforcement officers to effectuate safe arrests and remove dangerous criminals from American communities, making Americans less safe,” he said. “Boston is a sanctuary jurisdiction that refuses to fully cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.”
