ELIOT, Maine — A 13-year-old girl was found unconscious in a ditch following a hit-and-run crash in a New England town earlier this week, authorities said.
Officers responding to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian in the area of Worster Road in Eliot, Maine, just before 4 p.m. on Wednesday discovered the unconscious teen and recovered vehicle debris, according to Eliot Police Sgt. Ron Lund.
The girl was rushed to Portsmouth Regional Hospital to be treated for her injuries.
After canvassing the neighborhood, Lund said officers tracked down the vehicle in question and arrested 82-year-old Leon Benton in connection with the crash.
Benton is facing a charge of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, according to Lund. He is due in court in April.
“We thank the community for their assistance and support during this investigation. Our thoughts are with the young victim and her family as they navigate this difficult time,” Lund said in a statement shared on Facebook.
An investigation is ongoing.
